Editing Project

  1. Copyedit for Sidelines
    1. I went on November 2nd to the CIM for my copyediting session. Dylan set me up with four articles, three of which were film reviews that I really enjoyed doing. What made it even better was the variety, one movie I was extremely familiar with, the second I had some knowledge of and the third was one I had heard of only in passing. Having this diversity made reading the articles enjoyable, because I got to see someone else’s perspective. I learned quickly, however, that reviewing someone’s work, who I don’t know, is a lot harder than you would think. I edit friends’ papers all the time, but looking over something that is by someone I don’t know seemed really awkward. I wasn’t able to completely rewrite passages that I didn’t think worked, because I didn’t want to lose the original authors voice, but I also didn’t have them to ask for clarification on certain parts. So that made it really unnerving to me. Also knowing that one of the articles I edited had the possibility of not appearing in Sidelines made looking over it seem pointless. Why should I put effort into something that I don’t know is going to get published? So going to the CIM was a rather eye-opening experience for me. But it was also a lot of fun.
